Captain James Hope painted the most famous painting of Bloody Lane, "The Aftermath" depicting the bloodiest day in American history. An image of this painting is on display at Antietam, but the original was cut into pieces after being damaged by a flood in Watkiins Glen, New York. One piece is presently owned by the National Park Service and an adjoining piece was recently discovered by an art dealer in Upstate New York near Captain Hope's home.
IMO Antietam (or Sharpsburg, if you prefer) was the biggest opportunity missed, perhaps even moreso than the Peninsular Campaign, for the AotP to knock the AoNV completely out of the war until 1865. They had the advantage of knowing exactly what Lee's plans were. At South Mountain they had a chance to destroy Lee's army piecemeal while it was concentrating on other things (Harper's Ferry). And more importantly, they had a force that outnumbered Lee's by a more than two-to-one ratio, as...

I believe he was actually killed in Miller's Cornfield as it seems that's where the 49th went into action that day. The fight could have had a different effect on the Army of Northern Virginia if he acted in a way that he commited himself completely. That of a Confederate Tactical victory. McClellan had a plan to break Lee on three fronts.
