Can some one tell me the main information about the bull run

Date: McDowell started moving on the July the 16th. The skirmish at Blackburn's Ford was on the 18th between units of Tyler's right division and confederate forces under Bonham (Mitchell's Ford) and Longstreet's (Blackburn's). The 21st was the Battle of Bull Run.
Why? Chase (SOT), Lincoln, Washington in general, Northern newspapers- wanted action. The June 29th meeting between Lincoln's main cabinet and General Winfield Scott confirmed the general selected (McDowell over Mansfield) and the plan that would ensue. There were lots of problems with such an early operation. Many of the men on both sides only had 3 month active duty, and most were just there for political reasons. It is reasonable to state that out of the 30,000 union troops McDowell had, only about 5,000 to 8,000 of them took an active roll on the 21st. Plus you ahd supply, uniform, discipline problems. Few |
