150 Years Ago Today...April 24, 1865...Agreement between Sherman and Johnston dissolved

Gen. William T. Sherman learns of President Andrew Johnson's and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton's rejection of the surrender terms that Confederate Gen. Joseph Johnston had accepted on April 18th. The message is carried to Raleigh, North Carolina by U.S. Commanding Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who orders Sherman to commence operations against Johnston within 48 hours if ...terms similar to those given by Grant to Robert E. Lee at Appomattox on April 9th are not accepted. Sherman is incensed but obeys the order.
